Common questions

Which vehicles need AIS-140 in India?

Public service vehicles - stage and contract carriage buses, school buses, taxis, and aggregator vehicles - are the core category, and national permit goods carriers are covered in a number of states. Private non-transport vehicles are not covered.

What does AIS-140 actually require?

In broad terms: a certified VLTD fitted and activated, emergency or panic buttons where passengers are carried, continuous location reporting to the state backend, and data retention per the state notification.

Does AIS-140 apply the same way in every state?

No. The standard is national but fitment scope, enforcement timelines, and backend integration requirements are set by state notifications, which is why this tool gives an indicative answer and points you at your RTO.

Is this checker legal advice?

No. It summarises what normally applies so you can scope a project. Confirm the position with your RTO or state transport department before procuring.
